#CharacterSpotlight #Bookworms, Come and meet Sam, the star of Kristy Brown’s coming of age romance, #JustSam @KBrownauthor … I ADORE this cover, Bookworms! #YAbooks #teen #tennis #love

Good morning, bookworms!

Today, I’m joined by Kristy Brown, author of several YA fantasy series and the standalone, coming of age romance, Just Sam.

Great to have you here, Kristy. I hope you’re well on this sunny Tuesday morning.

Please can you introduce the character you’d like to shine the spotlight on today…

Sam is a teen who wants to be a tennis champion more than anything. From a young age she delighted in sharing her mother’s love for the game. When Sam loses the most important person in her world, she begins to build a wall around her heart so it can’t be broken again. Sam stops believing in herself, feeling like her biggest rival, the biggest match she’ll ever play is against life itself. She has so many new challenges ahead; moving house and school. Leaving all she knew behind. Can Sam begin to trust in love again when a certain boy begins to break down those barriers? Will she ever hit a ball again?

When and how did you create Sam?

A few years ago, I was watching Wimbledon with my son, who I’ve turned into a complete tennis nut, and I suddenly wanted to write a story around the sport. Just Sam isn’t solely focused on tennis, it’s more a love story about self-belief, friendship, and family.

Did you write the book to accommodate Sam or Sam to accommodate the book?

The first… I think! Sam is such a strong, often vibrant character that the story naturally unravelled.

What do you like most about her?

She’s just so lovable and comical, seeing people as Disney characters and the strong connections she has with her friends and family.

What do you like least about her?

Often, she chooses to struggle on in silence, and I want to shake her by the shoulders!

Did your early readers/editorial team like her to start with or did you have to change her in any way?

As this one is self-published, I used trusted family members and a teacher who I happen to be married to. I didn’t change anyone.

Does have any similarities with anyone real?

Sam has many different parts of me. The love of Disney, tennis, the insecurities about her talents.

What are your plans for her?

I’d like to write a second part because all the characters feel so real to me, and because we leave Sam with a future that I really want to explore. There’s so much potential and not just for Sam, but I want to see how her sister copes, how her other relationships work out…

Would you be friends in real life?

Yes, but maybe we’d annoy each other being so similar.

Sam sounds brilliant! Thanks so much for bringing her to join us today, Kristy.

Bookworms, I know you’re dying to know more, so here’s the blurb… Hit the picture to buy your copy now!

All Sam dreams of is being the next big tennis champion.

But when she suffers a great loss at such a young age, she finds it hard to believe in herself.

She becomes so scared of losing people that she hides her feelings to protect her heart.

Will she ever let anyone close enough to truly love her?

She never realised her toughest match would be against life itself.
