#DeathDeserved by Enger & Horst… What a cracking start to a new series! #BlixAndRamm #NordicNoir @EngerThomas @LierHorst @OrendaBooks @annecater

When Thomas Enger’s Henning Juul series finished, I was pretty upset to be honest so I was over the moon when I heard about his new series.

And what a belter of a thrill-fest Death Deserved is.

Before I share my review, here’s the blurb…

Police officer Alexander Blix and celebrity blogger Emma Ramm join forces to track down a serial killer with a thirst for attention and high-profile murders, in the first episode of a gripping new Nordic Noir series…

Oslo, 2018. Former long-distance runner Sonja Nordstrøm never shows at the launch of her controversial autobiography, Always Number One. When celebrity blogger Emma Ramm visits Nordstrøm’s home later that day, she finds the door unlocked and signs of a struggle inside. A bib with the number ‘one’ has been pinned to the TV.

Police officer Alexander Blix is appointed to head up the missing-persons investigation, but he still bears the emotional scars of a hostage situation nineteen years earlier, when he killed the father of a five-year-old girl. Traces of Nordstrøm soon show up at different locations, but the appearance of the clues appear to be carefully calculated … evidence of a bigger picture that he’s just not seeing…

Blix and Ramm soon join forces, determined to find and stop a merciless killer with a flare for the dramatic, and thirst for attention.
Trouble is, he’s just got his first taste of it…

My thoughts…

I bloody ADORED this read!

The opening scene is terrific… a real hook-you-in-and-never-let-you-go start to the series and one that won’t easily be forgotten.

As the blurb tells us, when Sonja Nordstrøm fails to attend an interview advertising her explosive autobiography, Emma Ramm visits her flat and finds things are amiss. Alexander Blix is the police officer assigned to the case. They join forces to find Sonja and end up in a race against the clock to identify the killer.

I was so invested in this one that I hardly remember the time it took to read it. I loved the plot, the characters, the writing style of both authors… everything about it.

The relationships created between the characters in Death Deserved all felt real and meaningful. We see sides to them both both professionally and personally that make them intriguing and likeable. Hints to their personal lives are dropped throughout and it’s easy to understand why thy get on. Both like to live as close to the edge as possible and will do almost anything to get what they want. When their endgame is the same thing, they create a force to be reckoned with and I think it was a wonderful decision to have them to have them working together instead of at loggerheads like we normally see with the police and the press.

There’s a real authenticity about these characters and the authors’ experience in each occupation shines through.

There is fear, and mystery, and intrigue, and everything you want and need from a thriller.

Death Deserved is a tense and perfectly plotted thriller that will keep you guessing from start to finish. I was thrown from pillar to post with my assumptions but nothing was what it seemed! I loved it and I can’t wait to see what else Horst and Enger have in store for us next.

Huge thanks to the team at Orenda for my review copy and to Anne Cater for my spot on the blog tour.
