I am beyond excited to be sharing my publication day review of Angela Marsons’s new DI Kim Stone book, First Blood!
Publishing’s best kept secret is finally out in the world and my God am I glad I can talk about it! Since getting that call to be involved in this super secret publication day it’s been a hard secret to keep but what an honour it is to be a part of something so special.
First Blood is sublime.
As my lovely friend Jen Med says, ‘It’s the book all Kim Stone fans have been waiting for and they didn’t even know it…’
Here’s the blurb …
Bookouture (14 Nov. 2019)
In the darkness of a cold December morning, Detective Kim Stone steps through the doors of Halesowen Police Station. She’s about to meet her team for the first time. The victim of her next case is about to meet his killer…
When the body of a young man is found beheaded and staked to the ground in a secluded area of the Clent Hills, Kim and her new squad rush to the crime scene.
Searching the victim’s home, Kim discovers a little girl’s bedroom and a hidden laptop. Why is his sister relieved to hear he’s dead – and where is the rest of his family?
As Kim begins to unearth the dark secrets at the heart of the case, D.C. Stacey Wood finds a disturbing resemblance to the recent murder of Lester Jackson. But that’s not all Stacey finds …
She’s convinced there is a link between the victims and a women’s shelter run by Marianne Forbes, Lester’s niece. A child of the care system herself, Kim knows all too well what it means to be vulnerable. Could Marianne be the key to cracking this case?
With the killer about to strike again, Kim is in deep water with a rookie squad. Inexperienced Stacey is showing signs of brilliance but struggling to hold her nerve and, while D.S. Bryant is reliable and calm, D.S. Dawson is a liability. With his home life in pieces, his volatile behaviour is already fracturing her fragile new team.
Can Kim bring Dawson in line and pull her crew together in time to catch the killer before another life is taken? This time, one of her own could be in terrible danger…
Discover where it all began for Kim and her team. An absolutely heart-stopping mystery thriller that will keep you glued to the pages, reading late into the night. Perfect for Kim Stone fans and new readers to the million-copy bestselling series.
A detective hiding dark secrets, Kim Stone will stop at nothing to protect the innocent.
My thoughts …
Silent Scream (book one in this series) was the first book I ever reviewed and I have been addicted to the characters ever since. In that one, we met a team of officers who appeared solid and who’d been working together for years. And what’s followed has been a wonderfully thrilling and somewhat heartbreaking journey.
First Blood takes us back to the start. Back to the first meeting between these characters who are more like than family than names on pages. And what a trip it is!
The eagle-eyed among you will see that there’s a certain name in the blurb, who is back! Let me tell you, reading their name for the first in First Blood broke my heart! And the tears started, then, in usual Marsons style, there’s not much room for tears as the heat kicks in and the pace picks up and we’re thrown into a rollercoaster of a case.
Marsons has given every fan exactly what we needed … like Jen Med says. I needed this book but didn’t know it.
What a fantastic idea to go back to the start. Take us back to that first meeting between this team who we look forward to catching up with … there’s something really special about this book. Throughout the ‘main’ series, the backgrounds and home lives of each character have been revealed bit by bit, we have been given the right information about them at the right time and at every step it has blown my mind. But now, Marsons has taken a jump back in time and takes us to the first time Dawson came flying through the office door, tie askew, shirt rumpled, hair a mess … the first time Kim gets in a car with Bryant and realises she might have to do the driving from now on, and the first time Stacey realises what a whizz she is at data mining. It really has made me fall even deeper in love with them all!
I don’t know how she does it. Marsons has developed these characters over the years and to go back to the start and get their personalities nailed must have been so hard, but my god was it worth it.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, opening a DI Kim Stone book is like turning up at a family event, the type where you see certain people once or twice a year, but where when you get there, it’s like you’ve never been apart.
First Blood is sublime.
Marsons’ best writing to date and I adored every single word.
I haven’t had a book hangover this bad for years! It took me a week to even look at another book!
Now, off you go and get your copy … that’s right, it’s OUT NOW!
About the author …
Angela Marsons is the Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of the DI Kim Stone series and her books have sold more than 3 million in 3 years.
She lives in the Black Country with her partner, their cheeky Golden Retriever and a swearing parrot.
She first discovered her love of writing at Junior School when actual lessons came second to watching other people and quietly making up her own stories about them. Her report card invariably read “Angela would do well if she minded her own business as well as she minds other people’s”.
After years of writing relationship based stories (The Forgotten Woman and Dear Mother) Angela turned to Crime, fictionally speaking of course, and developed a character that refused to go away.
She is signed to Bookouture.com for a total of 16 books in the Kim Stone series and her books have been translated into more than 27 languages.
Many of her books, including Blood Lines, Dead Souls, Broken Bones, Fatal Promise and Dead Memories reached the #1 spot on Amazon on pre-orders alone.
