One of the scariest books I’ve EVER read, The Passengers by John Marrs is brilliant, terrifying, and utterly shocking! Here’s my #blogtour review @johnmarrs1 @Tr4cyF3nt0n @EburyPublishing @PenguinRHUK

Reading this late one night I actually woke my husband up to tell him how scared I was … The Passengers by John Marrs is one of the most terrifying books I’ve ever read and it made my blood run cold at times.

Before I share my thoughts, here’s the blurb …

Ebury Digital (1 April 2019)

Eight self-drive cars set on a collision course. Who lives, who dies? You decide.

‘Provocative, terrifying and compulsive. Another savagely clever near future thriller’ Cara Hunter, bestselling author of CLOSE TO HOME

The new gripping page-turning thriller for fans of BLACK MIRROR from the bestselling author of HER LAST MOVE and THE ONE – soon to be a major Netflix series.

When someone hacks into the systems of eight self-drive cars, their passengers are set on a fatal collision course.

The passengers are: a TV star, a pregnant young woman, a disabled war hero, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife – and parents of two – who are travelling in separate vehicles and a suicidal man. Now the public have to judge who should survive but are the passengers all that they first seem?

My thoughts …

Well, what can I say about this one?

Ten years from now all cars on the road are automatic at the insistence of the government. The Artificial Intelligence used to control them is solid, there’s no way it can be interfered with, or so everyone thought. As the blurb tells us, eight cars are hacked, and the entire world is watching as the passengers are introduced to them ready for the opinionated public to decide which of them lives and who dies.

The Passengers is seriously twisted.

It’s utterly terrifying as it could happen. I don’t quite know how to explain why this storyline got to me so much. It’s bonkers and out there but at the same time, it isn’t so out there it’s unbelievable. There is every chance that we face a future which relies on AI and that scares me.

At the centre of the story is Libby, a psychiatric nurse on a form of jury duty. She is completely against all things automated and wants to voice her opinion on the cases the jury are faced with but she is shot down by the government minister running the sessions. Until the Hacker takes over the Internet with the live feeds from inside the court room and the eight cars he has hacked. I loved Libby. She is a strong character and her morals and resolve throughout the book are admirable. Marrs has a great skill for creating relatable characters, I was enthralled by the actual passengers and their stories, as twisted and awful as some of them were!

The plot is so complex and twisted I can’t really talk about it without giving away any spoilers, but I will say this: John Marrs is a wonderful author. This is my first outing into one of his books – yes, I know, I’m hanging my head in shame – but it will not be my last. Captivated from the first page, I devoured The Passengers in two sittings; reading most of it with my breath held and heart pumping!

The Passengers is pure genius: shocking, menacing, and utterly thrilling. I bloody loved it!

Hugest thanks to the publisher and tour organiser, Tracy Fenton, for my spot on the tour and review copy of the book.
