Seven Bridges by LJ Ross is one hell of a roller coaster of a read … gritty and hair-raising, it left me breathless!

Book 8 in the #DCIRyan series, the joint main character is, as always, the stunning backdrop of Newcastle and Ross’s enchanting descriptions of the locations will have you captivated.

Here’s the blurb …

Ryan’s most explosive case yet…

It’s been five months since a killer walked free and DCI Ryan is preparing to leave Newcastle to hunt him down – this time, for good.

But Ryan’s plans are scuppered when events take a dramatic turn and he is forced to stay and face his past one last time, or watch a friend suffer the consequences.

Amid the chaos, another killer is preparing to strike. When the Tyne Bridge explodes, Ryan’s team are faced with a frantic race to uncover a deadly foe who won’t stop until every bridge is burned, along with everybody on it…

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

My thoughts …

Ross has knocked it outta the park again!

There are some authors out there who you know, without a shadow of a doubt, will bring you another amazing book every time. Ross is one of them.

Seven Bridges sees DCI Ryan about to head off and hunt for a killer from his past, but, just as he’s about to leave, events transpire to stop him.

One of his own is accused of murder and there’s a madman is blowing bridges up!

Not the best time for him to leave the city …

Due to the nature of both events, new officers are brought in to help with the investigations, adding a new dimension to the team, and not always in a good way.

Don’t think that with this being book eight you shouldn’t read it, all Ross’s books can be read as standalones as she expertly works information from previous instalments into each book so that newbies know what’s gone on, without boring those who have read the previous books. This is a huge skill and one that not all serial authors have. I’ve read some where there is no back story and some where the past events overshadow the current plot to the point of distraction. Luckily, as I said, Ross has this element of her books totally nailed.

Obviously, there are the elements from the continuing storylines going on and the relationships between the characters are deepened and strengthened in each book and I’ve loved watching the characters grow and develop over the years. Ross has created a team who now feel like family and who you can’t help but love.

As the new characters are introduced, they bring a whole new dynamic to the book, as do the events surrounding one of the recurring characters. Without going into too much detail so I don’t spoil the plot, it’s wonderful to watch how the team react to one of their own being under suspicion.

All about love and loyalty, this subplot is one of my favourites, it shows how deep the connections run between this bunch of officers and the realism around the friendships is a joy to read.

The main plot, someone intent on causing mayhem and discourse in the city by blowing up bridges while people are on them, is gripping. The team are under the clock to find out who would want to do something so disgusting and as time ticks by, they realise that what they thought was going on, probably isn’t at all. The plot is twisted and shocking and totally brilliant!

I bloody loved it!

Highly recommended for all crime fiction lovers, Seven Bridges is an absolute must read!
