I was blown away by Michael J Malone’s A Suitable Lie, you can read my review here, and then A House of Spines knocked my socks off so I just knew After He Died was going to be right up there in my top ten of the year.
And it is!
I’m delighted to be sharing my review with you all today!
Here’s the blurb …
ORENDA BOOKS; None edition (30 July 2018)
You need to know who your husband really was…
When Paula Gadd’s husband of almost thirty years dies, just days away from the seventh anniversary of their son, Christopher’s death, her world falls apart. Grieving and bereft, she is stunned when a young woman approaches her at the funeral service, and slips something into her pocket. A note suggesting that Paula’s husband was not all that he seemed…
When the two women eventually meet, a series of revelations challenges everything Paula thought they knew, and it becomes immediately clear that both women’s lives are in very real danger.
Both a dark, twisty slice of domestic noir and taut, explosive psychological thriller, After He Died is also a chilling reminder that the people we trust the most can harbour the deadliest secrets…
My thoughts …
Michael J Malone is by far one of my favourite authors and he’s once again blown me away with his latest offering, After He Died.
We are thrown straight in at the deep end as Paula Gadd buries her recently deceased husband, Thomas. At the wake, his brother, Bill, makes some rather strange comments which at the time don’t seem to mean anything but as the days pass and Paula starts to think about things in the days that follow, along with a visit from a stranger who drops a bombshell, she starts to realise that her husband may not have been the person she thought he was.
As we discover more about Thomas’s past, we discover more and more about his family and the relationship between him and his two brothers, Bill and Father Joe.
Paula is a rather a complex character, one minute she seems on the verge of collapse, the next she has more determination and resolve than many would be in similar circumstances. Torn between her love for the man she thought he was and her feelings about the man she is being told he is, Paula has to get to the bottom of the rumours as the secrets of his past start to create a trail of dead bodies.
It’s hard to talk much more about the plot as it’s full of twists and turns and utterly shocking revelations!
Once again, Malone has created a world in which the reader is captured and thrown from pillar to post by the unease he steeps into each and every page. As the plot thickens and revelations are made, it’s beyond brilliant how Malone manages to pull you into the pages and keep you on your toes the whole way through.
I flipping loved it!
It’s a shocking, twisty, and compelling read that you absolutely HAVE to get!!!

About the author …
Michael J. Malone was born and brought up in the heart of Burns’ country, just a stone’s throw from the great man’s cottage in Ayr. Well, a stone thrown by a catapult, maybe.
He has published over 200 poems in literary magazines throughout the UK, including New Writing Scotland, Poetry Scotland and Markings. His career as a poet has also included a (very) brief stint as the Poet-In-Residence for an adult gift shop. Don’t ask.
BLOOD TEARS, his debut novel won the Pitlochry Prize (judge: Alex Gray) from the Scottish Association of Writers and when it was published he added a “J” to his name to differentiate it from the work of his talented U.S. namesake.
